The Wild Within

This past week, a new show on the Travel Channel premiered called "The Wild Within". It is a different kind of hunting show. The host, Steven Rinella, is a man that prides himself on being able to provide for his family by hunting and fishing. He lives in Brooklyn, New York and jokes about probably being the only guy with a deep freeze in his closet. In the first episode Steven and his brother go up to their cabin in Alaska to hunt for blacktail deer. I don't want to give to much away but it was a pretty good episode. I was really intrigued when I found out that there was going to be a hunting show on the Travel Channel and was pleasantly surprised when I began watching it. You can really see the raw passion that the host has for hunting and providing for his family. There were some parts in the episode that I was really surprised they kept in show. They showed some things that happen in real life situations on real hunts that some programs on the mainstream hunting networks won't show because of criticism. Steven said one thing on the show that I really liked, basically he said " I'm sick of people always saying I harvested a deer. You killed the deer, so say you killed the deer." I don't really want to get into a debate about this subject because I know it has been argued probably way too much. I just appreciate the fact that he's not afraid to say what he feels. A lot of hunting shows are starting to get very repetitive and it is refreshing to see something different. I thought it was cool that it really focused on providing for the family and not letting anything going to waste. I really enjoyed it and have already set the DVR to record the series. It airs on Sundays at 9EST. Here is a small clip from the first episode that shows Steven going out to catch some shrimp when he first arrives in Alaska...
