Shed Hunting Tips

Shed season is here and some people are finding sheds and some not so much. I am not claiming to be a expert shed hunter by any means, but I have been able to find a few in the past couple years. There are a lot of people out there who find WAY more sheds than I do. In fact I only really started shed hunting about three years ago. Over the past few years, there are some things I have learned that have helped me become a little more successful. Here is a list of some of my shed hunting tips...

1. Look in the places where bucks spend most of their time (bedding areas, food sources)

2. Check around every fence crossing. A lot of times a buck will jar his antlers loose when jumping over a fence.

3. When searching, focus on the 10-15 ft area around you. It is easy to start looking up and farther away, but most of the sheds you will find will be within this area.

4. Cover lots of ground.

5. When you find a shed, start looking around for the other side. Sometimes a buck will drop both antlers within just a few yards of each other.

6. Don't get discouraged! Sometimes you might not find any, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Keep on trying!

7. Have fun! It's always a good day when you get a chance to be outdoors!

These are some of the things that have helped me out shed hunting. Please feel free to share some of your shed hunting secrets.

Thanks for posting these awesome tips! I am definitely gonna use them. I have a game plan already where I want to start looking from your earlier advice... so I have my fingers crossed that it won't rain or snow this weekend so I can get started. Even if I don't find any, at least its a day outside...cabin fever sucks!
